Preparation Checklist for Students
About two weeks before the fair, start planning. Decide what time you want to go, building in extra time in case you have to wait to speak popular employers. You may need to ask permission to miss all or part of a class, and arrange to get notes from a classmate. You'll also want to make time to work on your resume and elevator pitch (the Resume Station and Job Search Essentials are a great opportunity to have an advisor help you).
The Job & Internship Fair app is a great place to start researching employers who are coming to the fair. You can search employers by the type of positions for which they're hiring (full- or part-time, fellowship, or internship), by degree area (arts, business, communications, etc.), and by diversity initiatives (equal opportunity for LGBTQA, underrepresented groups, veterans, persons with disabilities, etc.).
Here are some other questions to think about:
- Why does this organization interest me? (Their mission or values? The type of work they do? The work environment?)
- What skills, experience, or qualities do I have that would benefit the organization? (You can draw from previous jobs or community service work, positions in clubs, courses you've taken, etc.)
- What do I want to know about this organization that isn't readily available online? (This will help you ask a smart question that shows you've done your research.)
After you've updated your resume, print several copies to bring with you to the fair. To avoid long lines at the library on the day of the fair, print in advance. You can also print for free in the Career Center.
You should also bring a pen in case you need to take down contact information or make notes. If you have business cards, you might want to bring those as well.
When you speak with employers at the fair, you want to prepare a short pitch that sets you apart and quickly summarizes know your skills and interest in their organization.
Check out our guidelines on professional image. After you decide what you want to wear, clean and press your outfit in advance.
